Big girls don’t cry June 23, 2008

That’s the song I’m listening to right now. Funny lang kay there was a point in my life na igo ko ani na song. char! hahaha.. That was like a decade ago. Pastilan life. Songs like these have a way of dredging up memories stuck in the deepest recesses of my mind. Deep kuno. Oh well.

Good thing everybody involved moved on. Whew!

It’s time to be a big girl now. And big girls don’t cry.

Ces Drilon kidnap and release June 20, 2008

I’m not impressed.

First of all, it was Ces Drilon’s fault for being stupid. Exclusive interview with terrorists? She expected those people to honor their word? Might was well chop off her own head.

Then there’s the “board and lodging” bill. Right.

Then the President ordered an all-out offensive on the Abu Sayyaf and all of a sudden the hostages are released before anyone could fight? First, they said that they don’t know whether ransom was paid. Now, it turns out that Drilon’s family paid Php5 million in ransom. Very responsible. Now, they’re gonna kidnap more people for more money.

My highshool teacher said that guerilla warfare is the best in a war. Because those people can blend in the with civilians in a blink of an eye. I think the government should just take a battalion or two or ten from the armed forces and just go and wipe out those terrorists in Mindanao for good.

  • an account in about 12 different social networking sites.
  • been receiving an invitation to join a “new” friend network every other day or so.
  • 4 yahoo ids, 6 gmails, 3 aim, and a whole bunch of others.
  • uploaded pictures to share at 3 social networking site.
  • read the news religiously so i know what everyone else is talking about. that, and i LOVE being informed.
  • spent a lot of time looking at my friends pictures in Friendster, Multiply and Facebook
  • stayed up as late as right now (2:38am) blogging.

You might say, “get a life.” No, thank you. I have one. What I need is sleep. goodnight.

caveat emptor – check before you marry June 13, 2008

This news story was too interesting to ignore. An American man is seeking an annulment after he found out that his Filipino bride turned out to be gay. BAYOT diaY!

Of course, the bride has to have his side heard. Check out this posting from GMA News: The bride claims that his groom knew that the bride was gay and promised him sex change surgery in Thailand.

There are a couple of points that I wonder about regarding this issue and they are not addressed in these news articles:

- Who officiated their wedding? Wa kabantay na bayot ang bride?

- What about the bride’s family? Surely, they must know that in the Philippines, their ‘daughter’ cannot legally marry a man.

I am friends with a lot of gay guys in the Philippines. And yes, a lot of them are really pretty. Prettier than any average girl, even. All of them are genuinely nice and sweet people on the inside. Most of them are educated and smart and successful in their fields. The only thing that is hard for them to deal with is that they feel that they should be female but unfortunately have male bodies.

I can imagine the groom’s “shock and horror” (as the newspaper reported). To a lot of guys, this is probably one of their worst nightmares. To fall in love and marry someone, only on your wedding night, you don’t get what you expect. If this was not a true story, I’d say this is really funny.

Even more vividly, I can imagine the bride’s pain and how heartbroken he must be. To be rejected like that and then to have to deal with the ridicule (i’m sure daghan) later.

One of these two people is lying. I think I know who, but I won’t say it. What I can say is caveat emptor.

UNSA! No ransom, but paid for “Board and Lodging”??? June 12, 2008

Read this article and realize how screwed up this whole thing is.

http://www.gmanews.tv/story/100834/Kidnappers-free-cameraman-P2M-paid-for-board-lodging

And I quote:

Reports quoted Undersecretary Amilasan Amilbajar of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Mindanao as saying a P2-million “board and lodging fee” was paid in exchange for Valderama’s freedom.

This is total Bull-Poop! No way their accomodations would amount to P2Million. Where are they being held hostage? At the Amanpulo resort in Palawan in their private villa and getting massages on the beach at sunset, having caviar and vintage wine?

Call it “board and lodging”. Call it any other name. If it looks like ransom, sounds like ransom, feels like ransom, then it must be ransom. Ransom by any other name would stink just as bad.

Whoever paid this “bull-poop and lodging” fee is encouraging those terrorists to get more “boarders and lodgers”. Idiot.

You Got Fat June 10, 2008

In the Philippines, this is not always an insult. In fact, when I was younger, our neighbor told her friend:

“I’m so envious of you. You got fat. You must be eating good food and not have a lot of problems.”

See, “pinobre” (poor people)food is sauteed “alogbati”. see picture.

that, dried fish, and usually corn grits. Rice, if you’re lucky. No way the regular person will get overweight.

On one of our trips, D was greeted with, “You got fat.”

He got depressed. Until I explained to him what that really means.

Gordon Ramsey is a total butt, but I’m hooked. It’s embarassing, but sometimes, I think it is funny how the contestants take so much abuse from him. He calls people “donkey”, “stupid” and that’s just the more subtle ones. He throws a violent fit over raw salmon. He makes some seriously entertaining TV.

This is season is pretty entertaining. I was kinda rooting for LouRoss just because he’s Filipino and he seems to have great attitude. He got booted last night, though. He didn’t do very well in the last service. His clients returned their Filet Mignons because they were bleeding. Tsk. tsk, LouRoss. Proud of you anyway. You got so far. Mabuhay ka!

Matt should have been gone by now. He’s extremely lucky to survive several near-eliminations, a lot of humiliation from Chef Ramsey and cutting the tip of his finger off. He’s extremely lucky that he got transfered to the girl’s team. He would have been gone by now.

Jen should go. She’s just irritating.

I liked Ben, but he didn’t make it. Bobby has moments of brilliance but most of the time, he’s not even mentioned. Kinda coasting somewhere around the middle. Petroza is pretty cool, too.

I think it will be Bobby and one of the girls in the end.

archuleta vs cook May 29, 2008

I don’t really watch American Idol because I can’t stand Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy. However, there is not escaping seeing it on the news and hearing about it from friends and family. Inevitably, I heard that David Cook won.

Well, I kinda wanted David Archuleta to win. Because someone told me he was half Filipino (he’s not). And also, his Dad got in trouble, and that had to be hard on him. Oh, and I thought he was the better singer, although I’m not really a good judge of that.

Oh well. Hopefully, Archuleta is one of those AI non-winners who end up popular and famous anyway.

Mother’s Day May 26, 2008

My friend Lyn mentioned that she was hoping to get an expensive purse for Mother’s Day. Or whatever. As long as her husband shows her that he appreciates her, which I’m sure he does.

I wasn’t hoping for anything for Mother’s Day. One, we were in Hawaii for my husband’s Grandpa’s funeral. Two, my husband isn’t the ‘remember the dates’ kind. Three, he thinks Mother’s Day and pretty much all other occasions are the results of the giant conspiracy between the malls, Hallmark and DeBeers. I have many reasons to expect nothing.

We went out to dinner that night. All of us. They were giving away free roses. I got one for my husband’s mom. My hubby got one for me. I wasn’t empty handed on Mother’s Day.
